Wax-Based Colored Pencils

Wax-based colored pencils are made from pigment, wax, and other binders. Some manufacturers make soft- and hard-core versions of wax-based colored pencils. Lightfastness varies among manufacturers and the pencils within sets. They come in sets and open stock.

Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Colored Pencil

Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Colored Pencil

Prismacolor is a soft, 3.8 mm thick core pencil whose creaminess lends well to blending and burnishing. A round cedar casing encases the wax pigment core and is lacquered to match. There are issues with wax bloom, breakage and many of the pencils have low lightfastness scores. An affordable pencil. Available in sets of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 132 and 150; openstock.

Verithin pencils have a thinner, harder wax lead. They are excellent for clean edges and detail work. The pencils are hexagonal and the wood case is color-coded. Breakage is not so much of a problem with these Prismacolor pencils, but quite a few have low lightfastness scores. Available in sets of 12, 24 and 36; open stock.
