Pastel Papers

Pastel papers are designed for pastels but often work beautifully with colored pencil. Pastels do not contain a binder that allows them to adhere to paper, so pastel supports need to provide a tooth for the pastel to adhere to and hold the pigment in place. The three most common supports for pastel papers are laid paper, abrasive support and velour paper. For colored pencil, this usually means many layers of colored pencil can be applied and many different effects achieved.

Abrasive and velour supports do eat through a colored pencil more quickly than regular paper due to their texture.
